Preparation

To achieve a smooth and successful painting project, it is essential to take the necessary steps to prepare the room beforehand. To ensure confidence in your preparation, we follow these detailed steps:

1. Remove any small knick-knacks or items that could be damaged during the painting process. This includes picture frames, decorative ornaments, and small furniture pieces.

2. Protect your furniture to prevent any accidental damage or splatters. Use drop cloths or plastic sheeting to cover any furniture that cannot be removed from the room.

3. Safeguard your flooring in the areas you will be painting. This can be done using drop cloths or plastic sheeting, ensuring your flooring is completely covered.

4. Perform necessary preparation tasks such as filling and sanding cracks and holes, removing wall coverings or borders, and cleaning surfaces to ensure proper paint adhesion. These tasks will ensure that the paint will adhere to the surface properly and prevent the color from peeling or flaking.

5. With everything adequately prepared, you can confidently begin painting, knowing your room is ready. By following these steps, you can ensure that your painting project will succeed.

Priming
Some areas may require priming before we can start to paint. We use many primers, each with a specific purpose or attribute. Each primer is selected based on the conditions we encounter. We prime to seal water or smoke stains or knots on trim and deter further bleeding. Also, we may prime bare wood to raise the grain for better sanding or to seal and hold back tannin resins. Some primers may be used to help with adhesion in areas with peeling or flaking problems. Specific primers are needed to fill porous walls and create an even sheen on washable top coats, while others may be tinted to form a base for proper coverage with many deeper wall color selections.

Caulking
Trim is caulked and puttied as needed to seal gaps and unsightly holes. We may use adhesive caulking if an area needs extra support. The edge will also be lightly sanded before re-coating if it is necessary for adhesion due to a prior glossy finish or to smooth out a primary coating. Also, we often wipe with a liquid deglosser to further clean and prepare (mainly if the older layer contains oil).

Painting

When it's time to start painting the interior, we'll apply the appropriate coating(s) to achieve the desired appearance and performance. We're happy to assist with color selection or recommend a decorator. There are several finishes to choose from, including Flat Finish, Matte, Eggshell, Satin, Semi-Gloss, and Full Gloss. Additionally, we offer specialty coatings like mildew-resistant bathroom options and odor-free paints for hospitals or those with respiratory concerns. We even have an EPA-registered microbicidal color that can kill five types of infection-causing bacteria upon contact. We're equipped to recommend various coatings for different situations as needed.

Staining

At One Stop Painting, we specialize in wood staining and sealing, using varnishes and urethane. Our services include bar top finishes, which are commonly used in restaurants. We also work with stains and tinted varnishes specially designed to blend old and new wood. Our polyshade products are tinted varnishes that can alter colors, add luster, and create a uniform look. In addition, we offer sanding and stripping services for older handrail systems, as well as repairs for aged trim or cabinetry. For more details, please visit our cabinet refinishing page.

Best Color for a Room

When choosing the best color for a room, it's important to consider the mood you want to create. Soft, neutral colors like beige and gray can create a calming effect, while bold colors like red and blue can create a more energizing atmosphere. Also, consider the natural lighting in the room and how the color will look at different times of day. Don't be afraid to experiment with different shades and hues until you find the perfect color for your space.
